Once a woman started having her periods, any sexual activity can lead to pregnancy. This is a natural phenomenon. Today it is possible to delay the pregnancy with various methods. Contraception is the term given to methods which delay or prevent pregnancy. Contraception is safe to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
It is best to consult a gynaecologist if one wants to choose contraception. They will analyse your condition and suggest the right contraception. There are many devices, drugs (pills) and barrier methods (condoms) that act as effective contraception. Some of the best and widely used contraception are:
1. Contraceptive pills.
These are available as over the counter pill as well as with the doctor. A woman has to take the contraceptive pill on a monthly cycle. This cycle is usually 28 days. Once the cycle is over then it has to be started again.
It has been shown as pretty efficient in preventing pregnancy. Its efficacy rate is 99%.
2. IUCD- intrauterine contraceptive device – copper T/ mulitload / Mirena or levonorgestral IUCD
These can be inserted inside the uterus and is an OPD procedure performed by gynaecologist within 7 days of your periods. It is very effective method and very good efficacy rate .

3. Sponge.
A sponge is yet another method of contraception. This is different from others. A contraceptive sponge is inserted in the vagina. There is a depression which holds it in place over the cervix. Applicator has foam which has spermicide. This destroys the male sperm.

4. Diaphragm.
Today most women choose to use this method. It is easier to use. A diaphragm is a disc-shaped device. This is inserted in the vagina over the cervix. It fits well into the pubic bone and ring keeps it safe in the walls of the vagina.
It has shown to be 83% in preventing pregnancy.
5. Injection
Some women are more comfortable with injection as they don't have to remember a schedule. A doctor will give a progestin filled 'contraceptive injection'. This shot is given every three months. It is beneficial for women as it stops the release of the eggs completely. This cycle has to be repeated every three months.
It seems to have an efficiency of 94%.
Contraception is a good means to curb pregnancy. It should only be taken after the advice of your gynaecologist.
